MY TURN: Relationship with Facebook ends with disconnect

Zombie-like, I trudged along, despising every second until I could no longer look at my online persona without feeling remorse and/or disgust.

This wasn't me. The endless stream of status updates, the steady supply of photos from well-meaning individuals I no longer knew or cared about, the constant chatter of people renewing old ties in a very public setting, sometimes under scrutiny, the mindless investment of time and energy that was better spent someplace else.

In my convoluted thinking, I believe that the mystery of a lost person is at times more appealing than the actuality of knowing they are alive and well, their true value derived from scarcity. Reason enough to delete my Facebook account without hesitation.

To my pleasant surprise, no one seemed to notice or take offense. Perhaps they felt the same way about me and didn't bother saying otherwise, a true sign of friendship in an era where convenience is often taken for granted.

The irony is that it took so long to reach this point, after forgetting that I knew so many people once upon a time.
