At least on the surface level it seems utterly ridiculous that a communication technology that limits conversational utterances to 140 characters might be of use in a classroom setting. Twitter seems to foster two of the cultural practices we often work so hard to resist in the classroom: reductive communication utterances and egoistic self-absorption. As a professor, I see it as one of my jobs to maximize the signal of discussion while limiting the noise, and a cursory examination of Twitter might suggest that it involves way too much noise to be of any pedagogical value.
